Alyssa Night
They arrived in the maintenance section. And all the while, Alyssa exploded within.
She had⦠she had voluntarily touched the Light of the Gods. It had recognized what she was immediately.
Sheâd heard it scream. In most of her other interactions with the Light of the Gods, she had never directly heard it give a psychic scream, as it had never been able to inhabit her. Now⦠that had changed. She wanted to tell herself it was only because she had touched an enormous collection of the Light of the Gods. But what if her armor had now poisoned her sufficiently that she could become a host?
Fear erupted through Alyssa. She would never be able to control it. Becoming the toy of someone like Andrew was horrifying. But it would be nothing compared to what the Light could do with her. Combined with her power, she could destroy all without ever looking back.
Speaking of looking back.
Max had a chance to splutter and fall to his knees. Something had happened to him back in the god sanctum. Heâd almost forgotten the plan.
But now she turned, and she realized he was no longer overcome emotionally.
Someone had appeared behind him.
It was too late for him to move. The person smashed into his side, barreling into him with the force of a gunshot.
Alyssa screamed. She jolted forward, knowing full well thereâd be little her body could do. She finally caught a glimpse of what attacked Max. She saw the glowing skin of a god. Lines of light charged over the manâs body, gathering in his hands almost like lightning getting ready to strike out.
Max didnât have a chance.
He still managed to roll, kick the god off him for now, and put some distance between them.
Alyssa wouldâve helped â in a heartbeat â if she could do anything.
Sheâd rued the weakness of her armor before. But never had its existence been this exquisitely hard to withstand. She stood there, her lips open, her eyes wide, her heart shaking out of her chest. But no matter how much she struggled, there was nothing she could do. Maxâs life was now in his own hands.
